Yesterday my dog really saved me

Last night, as usual, I was walking my dog in the park. It was already getting dark, but the path was familiar, and I didn't even think anything strange. Suddenly he stopped, looked into the bushes and became alert. I thought: "A squirrel or a bird, as usual," but no. He started growling. And not just like that, but seriously - standing in front of me like a guard.

And then a guy comes out of the bushes. A hood, hands in his pockets, looking, frankly, so-so. The dog is standing between us and does not take its eyes off him. I thought: "Yes, something is wrong here," and decided not to wait. He slowly turned around and walked to the road. He was still looking at that man until we were far enough away.

Thank God, nothing happened, but if it wasn't for my dog, I wouldn't have even noticed that man and could have gotten into some trouble. Now I think that sometimes you should listen to dogs. They obviously know more than we do.

kidzndogz Once my former Rottie (RIP) woke me in the middle of the night growling at the back door. I was all the way upstairs, and he was loud enough to wake my sound sleeping I went downstairs and tried to turn on the back light, but it was out. I

praised him, and told him he was a good watch boy (because he was trained to do this) gave him his "alert" treat, then when I didn't see anything, I went back to bed. He stayed there growling for a bit, then came back upstairs.

The next day, when I went to leave out the back door, the handle came off in my hands, and someone had taken my light bulb for the back porch light. I called the landlord to fix the handle, but my boy probably saved me from some bad things.

Major-Cauliflower-76 As the saying goes, I never trust a man who doesn't like dogs, but I always trust a dog when he doesn't like a man. Glad to hear nothing happen, but the dog likely scared him off.

SingingFrogs . I always listen to my dogs. They can hear and smell WAY better than any human. I will wait 15 seconds and listen to their tone and see if they start to settle down. If not, I go stand beside them and try to "see" what they are barking at. If I see it and it's a squirrel or something, then I stand beside them and reassure them calmly that it's no big deal. They usually calm down quickly.

If I can't see what they are alerting at, I stand beside them on alert as well. I want them to know I have their back. Would never yell at them for doing their job. Doing this has taught me a lot about their different barks and posture and they don't run around acting crazy.

socialpronk • 3 silkens and a pom Always listen to your dog. Notice what they notice. One of my friends was hiking with her rottweiler offleash. The dog was just ahead at the top of a hill and started grumbling. She recalled her dog and put the leash on and a man came up over the hill. He said, "You're lucky you have that dog with you," as he walked by her.

Alopexotic • Had a really similar experience last summer with my boy and I've never been happier to have him out with me!

Was out for our evening walk and we're passing along the top of a sledding hill that overlooks our local park when we stopped to watch some fire spinners/dancers performing in the lower part of the park. Few minutes go by and all of a sudden my pup steps right in front of me, lowers his head, and starts growling more aggressively than I've ever heard him.

I couldn't see in the dark but a dude had been heading up the steepest part of the hill straight at us. (There's sidewalk on either side of the hill and there was absolutely no reason for him. to go up the steep grass like that). He mumbled something about "didn't see you had a dog" and then sort of stumbled towards the other sidewalk. We booked it the other way and dude started following us until I changed directions towards the main road where there are business.

Extra_Design1370 OP It's amazing how dogs can sense things we can't see or notice.

No_Chemistry_5371 I'm glad you're ok! Hug your dog extra tight. My female rough collie doesn't take her eye off of men walking by themselves when I'm walking her day or night. I think she picked up on my weariness while we were out once (sketchy looking man kept stopping ahead of us and turning around to look at us). Now she distrusts all men out walking, even when walking on the opposite side off the road.

Sweet Jebus731. True story: many MANY years ago when my mom had given birth to four kids within five years, she found herself in need of hobbies away from the house/kids. So she joined a tennis club and started interviewing babysitters to watch us kids. At the time, we had several dogs and cats.
  • 22
The first interviewee was an older grey-haired lady, pretty much the spitting image of Mrs. Doubtfire. Upon meeting her, my mom immediately thought she should be fine, given her age etc. When she tried to walk her upstairs to show her the children's rooms, our German Shepherd planted herself at the top of the stairs and growled. That low, guttural growl that translates to "I WILL kill you if you come closer."
  • 23
My mom was shocked and gently admonished the dog, but she wouldn't budge. She turned to the interviewee and said, "I'm sorry, I can't hire you. If my dog won't let you upstairs, this clearly won't work."

The next interviewee was a young woman about 18 years old. Our dog happily led her up the stairs and asked for pets. That woman was our babysitter for the next several years. Dogs know. Never question them.
